About the album

For a long time, I have cherished the idea of making of an album dedicated to Dutch compositions written for the classical guitar.

During my studies at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague between 2008 and 2014, I developed a strong curiosity about the relationship between creating and performing musicians, in current times and in the past. To expand my knowledge on this topic, I worked with living composers whose collaboration I dearly treasure.

The realisation of Remgewogen is a project that I have been looking forward to immensely. The process of actively working with composers has contributed to my musicianship, and further inspired me to compose for the classical guitar.

"This is making music at the highest level; we’re right in the middle of the University of guitar performance. Impeccable technique, paired with an astounding musical insight, and a manner of recording that makes every single note almost palpable. What an amazing album!"

Aart van der Wal, Opus Klassiek

"Melodic, with a hint of melancholy, honouring the music of Debussy, but most of all the facets of the acoustic guitar …"

Ben Taffijn, Nieuwe Noten

"The young guitarist Martin van Hees has dedicated his second album entirely to Dutch music, a feat in itself. His extremely well-cared for yet bold performance just as much, and the extraordinary packaging of the disc shouldn't remain unmentioned."

Frits van der Waa, De Volkskrant

"Martin van Hees plays guitar sometimes like a one man band; bass, accompaniment and melody at the same time. He plays rhythmically, expressive when necessary, and Latin-romantic when possible. […] We are drawn into the music, and that’s what it’s all about."
