ICD-11: bc9z

Ramin Amin Tafreshi

Description

"ICD-11: Bc9z is an intense, rhythm-driven work for bassoon and live electronics by Ramin Amin Tafreshi and Soheil Shayesteh. The title refers to “Cardiac Arrhythmia” in the ICD-11 medical classification, resembling the piece’s irregular, pulsing rhythms.

To reflect the unpredictability of an arrhythmia, the piece is structured in an aleatoric mobile form, providing the performer with freedom in interpretation and order of events. The electronics process the bassoon’s sound live, adding an extra layer of unpredictability that is unique in each performance. Additionally, every sound—from pitched tones to percussive noises—originates from my bassoon and broadens the instrument’s sonic boundaries.

My collaboration with Ramin and Soheil began after I travelled to Kashan, Iran, where I got to know the Persian culture and music. That experience led to a friendship with Ramin and Soheil, which eventually resulted in this piece. Subtle traces of Persian ornamentation, pitch material, and syncopated rhythms are woven into the music, reflecting their cultural origins."
