Description
BLACK was originally composed for two amplified bass clarinets. Its quick success led Mellits to adapt it for a range of other pairings: two baritone saxophones, two bassoons, two bass recorders, two electric basses. From 2015 onwards, quartet versions followed as well, for clarinets, saxophones, and percussion. On this album, it appears in a version for bass and baritone saxophone.
The two players weave tightly interlocking patterns, building a fabric in which the parts are fully integrated. Within this shared world, the musicians are equals, each completing the other's every move. As the patterns develop, they shift and splinter, allowing fragments to spin off and push the momentum forward. Five minutes of rapid-fire notes, combining and merging into a single black (w)hole.
