Oh, Fair Cedaria, Hide Those Eyes, Z. 402

Henry Purcell

Description

"Oh, Fair Cedaria, Hide Those Eyes has always held a special place in my heart. Growing up, almost every holiday we would take a ten-hour drive to our holiday house in France. During those trips, we would always listen to music and one of the CD’s we would often listen to was Essential Purcell, performed by The King’s Consort. Oh, Fair Cedaria, Hide Those Eyes was one of the songs on this CD and for me one of the most beautiful I had ever heard. Its beautiful melody stayed with me, so much so that I decided to arrange it for my debut album. In this version for bassoon and continuo, I wanted to demonstrate that the bassoon, too, can take on the role of a soprano.

Oh, Fair Cedaria, Hide Those Eyes is a simple yet captivating love song. It paints a picture of beauty so overwhelming that it must be hidden “hide those eyes”. The bassoon is especially suited to express this longing and admiration of Purcell’s composition."
