Vukosavljević: a mind in the heart

Joana Gama

About the album

a mind in the heart” is the 3rd album by composer Ivan Vukosavljević, created in collaboration with Portuguese pianist Joana Gama. Consisting of 8 movements, it is composed under the veil of sounds of sacred music from Ivan’s homeland of Serbia. The album is immersed in the classical sound of the piano, the mystery of the Orthodox chant, the horizontal play of drone and melody, and the eternal presence of the sacred in music.

The piece is in part inspired by the Serbian Orthodox chant, its melodic attributes and development, the unmeasured and semi-improvisational performance practice and overall emotional and spiritual qualities of the music itself. And the way in which those attributes are explored through a completely foreign instrument to that practice – the piano. The horizontal world of melody and drone, is induced through the vertical environment of a harmonic instrument.

The results speak for themselves—exceptional microphone technique, thoughtful mic selection, and carefully chosen venues combine to deliver beautifully natural captures of acoustic performances. Every new release is an aural pleasure. If you value acoustic instruments recorded honestly, in real spaces, and without artifice, there are few better places to look than the TRPTK catalog. I'm always delighted by what I hear.

Rush Paul, Positive Feedback

The eight compositions work as études. They are performed by Joana Gama with great empathy, as if she herself is meditating. Her playing is transparent and contemplative, the recording warm and spacious. Partly due to the predominantly modal character of the music, the album breathes a sense of wholesome tranquility.

Thea Derks, de Cultuurpers

A simply sublime record, flawlessly performed by Joana Gama... Magnificent cover art, an interesting and detailed booklet, impeccable sound recording: truly beautiful work.
