Josef Malkin is a Dutch violinist and composer. Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, he studied violin and composition in Tbilisi, Moscow, Tel-Aviv, and The Hague. He studied among others with Ödön Pártos (pupil of Zoltan Kodaly). Josef Malkin also participated in violin masterclasses with Isaac Stern, Pablo Casals, and Aaron Rosand. He has performed solo in Germany, France, Israel, the United States and The Netherlands.
He was a member of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam since 1990 until his retirement in 2015.
On May 4, 2006 his song cycle Black Flowers was performed at the National Memorial Day ceremony in the New Church in Amsterdam, in the presence of Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands. The performance was broadcast live on Dutch National television. The American premiere of his Cantata Yizkor for soprano, mixed choir and symphony orchestra took place in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City on October 25, 2008, in Salt Lake City in 2009 and was recorded by Bulgarian National Radio Orchestra and Choir with his daughter, soprano Channa Malkin, as a soloist. His composition Song of Songs for Soprano, Tenor, Alto Flute, Tambourine and Harp commissioned by the Amsterdam Jewish Music Festival was performed in 2018.
Malkin’s compositions have been performed, among others, by the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra at the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ in Amsterdam, at the Delft Chamber Music Festival by an ensemble led by violinist Liza Ferschtman, in TivoliVredenburg Utrecht, Philharmonie Haarlem, and at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival in Ireland. His works are regularly heard on Dutch national television and radio. Most recently, five of his Twelve Russian Songs were released on the acclaimed album This is not a lullaby by the audiophile label TRPTK, recorded by his daughter Channa Malkin.
