Manuel Sánchez García

Biography

Manuel Sánchez García’s artistic orientation unfolds across a wide constellation of research paths. These include technical musical practices viewed through historical and global perspectives, questions of metacomposition, the role of emerging artistic forms in addressing contemporary societal issues, and more elusive reflections on symbolism and subconscious processes. Alongside these declared interests, there remain others that are intentionally left unspoken; the notion of secrecy itself constitutes a subject of particular fascination within his artistic thinking.

As a composer, Sánchez García is consistently engaged in a dual pursuit: deepening and refining his established interests and working methods, while simultaneously pushing beyond the boundaries of his existing knowledge. Since the earliest stages of his development, two core areas of study have remained central to his work: pitch organization and the shaping of musical perception through proportional segmentations of time.

He obtained a Master’s degree in Composition from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where he studied primarily with Richard Ayres and Wim Henderickx. His earlier academic training—including a Master of Music in Composition and a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education—took place in Seville and Estonia, where he studied with composers such as Servando Valero, Antonio J. Flores, and Toivo Tulev.

In addition to his formal education, he has worked with numerous other composers through seminars, masterclasses, courses, and private lessons, including Hèctor Parra, Carola Bauckholt, Georg Friedrich Haas, Toshio Hosokawa, Dmitri Kourliandski, and David del Puerto.

His music has been performed by committed interpreters in Spain, the Netherlands, Estonia, Belgium, Singapore, and Taiwan, with upcoming premieres planned in Japan, the United States, and Germany. He has collaborated with ensembles such as Nieuw Ensemble, Atlas Ensemble, Orkest de Ereprijs, Zahir Ensemble, Versión Vocal, Manufaktur für Aktuelle Musik, and Looptail, among others. His interdisciplinary work includes collaborations with set designer Martina Bauer, dancer and choreographer Eduardo Rojas, and graphic artist Kry García.

Since 2008, Sánchez García has been continuously active in musical education and cultural promotion. His initiatives include organizing and crowdfunding projects such as the Noches de Repálago concert series in Seville, the MASC collective, and the sound–light–space experience Baptista, vel Solis Cedens.

In 2016, he was awarded a supported artist grant by the Young Artfund Amsterdam (YAA).
