Biography

Gerardo Gozzi is a composer, performer, and conductor. His music is based on the perception of sound as a physical object, possessing perceivable size and tactile qualities.

He began his musical career as a clarinet and saxophone player, and a fascination with the timbral potential of woodwinds consistently permeates his music as a source of colour and as a continuous search for new forms of expressivity. Performing on wind instruments—both as a soloist and in various ensembles—remains a central part of his musical life and serves as the primary field of exploration for his compositions. He also trained as a pianist and conductor, which expanded his focus on harmony and the use of large instrumental formations.

Inspired by architecture and physics, Gozzi often conceives music in terms of structure and space. His creative output initially aimed at the creation of sound environments—acoustic spaces in which audiences can linger and momentarily escape reality—and has gradually evolved into an exploration of spatial mental projection within the listener’s mind.

His music has been performed in prestigious venues worldwide by internationally acclaimed soloists and ensembles, including Talea (New York), Exaudi (London), Ensemble InterContemporain (Paris), Divertimento (Milan), Fractales (Brussels), and Duo Ebano (Amsterdam), among others. He studied at leading European institutions such as the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, Accademia Romanini in Brescia, the Royal College of Music, and the Royal Academy of Music in London. His composition mentors include Azio Corghi, Stefano Gervasoni, Dai Fujikura, Simon Bainbridge, Oliver Knussen, and Pierluigi Billone.

He regularly performs as a saxophone improviser in London, most notably with the London Improvisers Orchestra, as well as with a close network of improvising musicians.

Gozzi is Artistic Co-Director of Ensemble Resilience (Amsterdam) and Area Leader in Musicianship and Improvisation at the Royal College of Music (London), where he teaches courses in improvisation, theory, and stylistic composition.
