When we were asked by composer Maxim Shalygin to record his piece “Lacrimosa or 13 Magic Songs”, we were extremely excited. Shalygin is a Ukranian composer for contemporary music, and his Lacrimosa is an astounding piece full of completely new sounds on seven violins. For a location, we were invited to the Muziekhuis, home of Stichting Gaudeamus, a foundation that strives to help contemporary art and music. The piece itself was dedicated to Martijn Buser, founder of Gaudeamus. The studio at Muziekhuis was relatively dry, yet had a pleasant sound to it. It was aided by a slight touch of reverb.
